A futures prop firm evaluates and funds traders on simulated CME futures - equity index, energy, metals, rates and currency contracts - rather than forex and CFDs. The structural differences follow from the instruments: day-trading only (flat before the daily close), contract-count position limits instead of lot sizes, and end-of-day drawdown mechanics.

The fee model differs too. CFD firms charge a one-time evaluation fee; futures firms run monthly subscriptions until you pass - Topstep's 50K Combine is $49 a month plus $149 activation, FTMO Futures Growth on the same size is $119 a month with no activation (both checked 28 October 2026) - so total cost scales with how long the evaluation takes.

Platforms change as well: NinjaTrader, Tradovate and TradingView at FTMO Futures; TopstepX at Topstep - not the MT4/MT5 world of CFD firms. The full model: futures prop firms explained; the comparison that matters: futures prop firm comparison.

Contract specifications for the products these firms evaluate are published by CME Group.
